Google+, Google’s new social networking project, is by all accounts off to a much better start than its former social project, Google Buzz.

The tech giant had to shut down extending new Google+ invites because of too much initial demand, not allowing anyone new to secure invites at this point. The result: Hundreds of Google Plus invite listings on eBay.

Vic Gundotra, Google’s SVP Engineering, wrote in a post on his Google profile, “We’ve shut down invite mechanism for the night. Insane demand. We need to do this carefully, and in a controlled way. Thank you all for your interest!”

There are currently around 250 invites up for grabs on eBay, with bidders placing bids on the auction site from $0.99 to upwards of $20. Google+ invites are sent to specific user email addresses, so it is uncertain whether these invites will even work, however. PC Magazine reached out to a Google spokesperson (as well as eBay), who remarked that they were unsure.

If you are wondering how to secure a Google Plus invite and simply cannot wait for the service to open its doors to new users again, look no further than eBay. But you will have to take the risk of that invite in fact not working.
