At a live event in Santa Monica, Amazon unveiled a slew of Kindle products including a “Paperwhite” e-reader, upgraded 7″ Kindle Fire HD, and, most importantly, an all-new 8.9″ Kindle Fire HD.  With a bevy of exciting features and low price points, the new Kindle Fire products might finally challenge Apple’s stranglehold on the industry. Take a look at these photos from the Amazon Kindle Event and keep reading for more information on the devices.

So, here’s the rundown of the devices. Let’s start with the least exciting: the Paperwhite. The new e-reader has 62% more pixels than the Kindle Touch, has a touchscreen, and uses a fiber-optic lighting system four years in the making. The device is slimmer than, but was the same as, the Touch. The battery, of all features, might be the most exciting; it can last for 8 weeks while on. The Wi-Fi only edition will cost $119 while the 3G will cost $179.

Now, for the more exciting releases.

The new Kindle Fire HD will come in two sizes: 7″, like the original, and an 8.9″ version. The larger edition will have an IPS 1920×1200 resolution screen, which equates to 254 pixels per inch. Apple’s retina display iPad, by comparison, is virtually identical with 264 PPI.

Both Fires come with dual stereo speakers and not one but two antennae. According to Bezos, this leads to better and faster connections.

The 7″ Fire HD will cost $199 and the 8.9″ version, with 16GB, will sell for $299. The 7″ ships September 14 and the 8.9″ on November 20.

The fun doesn’t stop there, however. Bezos also unveiled an 8.9″ Fire HD with 32GB of memory and, drum roll, please, 4G LTE. It will cost $499. The highest end iPad, which has the same memory but only 3G connectivity, costs $729.
