Fresh off its Primetime Emmy domination, the much anticipated Homeland season 2 premiere aired last night. The contemporary wartime drama was certainly the biggest winner at the Emmys this year, taking home statues for Outstanding Lead Actress (Claire Danes), Outstanding Lead Actor (Damian Lewis), Outstanding Drama Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Homeland’s season 2 premiere, however, looks not to sit satisfied in its Emmy glory, but to build upon the series’s initial blockbuster success. Movie and television aggregator website IMDB bills the show as, “Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody returns home eight years after going missing in Iraq. Carrie Mathison, a driven CIA officer, suspects he might be plotting an attack on America.” Much of the show’s success is a result of its spin on contemporary relevance. But this is no ordinary war-thriller; it’s a Moby Dick-like obsession story with a present day terrorism twist.
The end of season 1 was lauded by critics almost unanimously. Out of 24 critics indexed by Metacritic, only one review was mixed and 23 were positive. The popularity of Showtime’s drama seems to have carried over, TV and movie critique site ScreenRant writes.
“Homeland does many things very well, but one of them is the show’s awareness of just how long certain revelations must wait before they’re made known by its characters. Brody’s keeping a lot of secrets from his wife, but this one defines him. More importantly, Jessica’s response makes who she is clearer to the audience. She’s no longer an ancillary character who Brody has to keep secrets from; she’s now an active participant in keeping truths about her husband from the public he serves. The writers know that building tension is great, but sooner or later, if its not released – even in little doses – it has a tendency to go flat. The trick to keeping certain areas of apprehension high is by relieving the pressure every so often.”
