From startups to sports teams, there is an unparalleled rivalry between New York and Boston. Now, local food trucks are taking it one step further.

The inaugural Food Truck Throwdown takes place in Boston this Saturday, pitting seven of Boston’s mobile eateries against seven of New York’s, in one of the most deliciously intense battles the Northeast has ever laid eyes (or taste buds) on.

The Food Truck Throwdown is the brainchild of Kickass Cupcakes owner Sara Ross.

“Given the rivalry between NY and Boston with sports, I thought [NY was] a natural choice for the inaugural event,” says Ross of the inspiration behind the trucks. “And they responded to my invitation immediately with lots of enthusiasm.”

Earlier this fall, Bostonians were encouraged to vote on which local food trucks they’d like to represent one of seven categories in the competition. The votes were tallied and the final contestants are as follows: Bon Me, Lobsta Love, Mei Mei Street Kitchen, Roxy’s Grilled Cheese, Staff Meal and The Cookie Monstah. Kickass Cupcakes naturally got a “bye” in the voting and will be participating as well.

The Throwdown is a 10-hour foodie spectacular, in which the trucks compete in a series of contests throughout the day to win the coveted title of Best Food Truck, as well as smaller titles in each of the categories. There will be a public ballot and celebrity judges, including Jenny Johnson of NECN’s Emmy award winning TV Diner with Billy Costa.

The event takes place on the Rose Kennedy Greenway and is free to attend. There will be plenty of food and live music, and Ross hints at the possibility of a “Beer Throwdown” following the dining.

“[I’m] hoping it will be an epic success and absolutely would love to make this an event that happens as least twice a year,” says Ross, adding that she hopes New York would host an event as well.

The Food Truck Throwdown takes place this Saturday, October 13 from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. For more information, click here.
