Don’t get pegged as a tourist holding up the line at the Metro turn
styles! Here is a quick 5-tip guide for “dummies” to make navigating the
DC Metro System easy as can be..

1.) Get a SmarTrip card!

This necessity makes it easy to swipe and go. Load money onto your card, enjoy discounted rates, and don’t worry about fare cards every again. **Make sure you register your card with WMATA in case it is ever lost or stolen.

2.) Discover your route(s)

Familiarize yourself with schedules, bus and rail routes, and the easiest ways to get around efficiently. The new WMATA mobile site makes it simple, and there are plenty of apps that help you track upcoming buses and trains.

3.) Register for Capital BikeShare

DC’s bike share program is among the best in the nation, and it’s going to continue expanding and improving. The program currently has over 200 stations and well over 2000 bikes in circulation.

4.) Avoid rush hour, game day, festival, and peak travel times

Not only will you avoid the crowds, but you’ll also avoid increased fare rates. Rush hour fare rates increase until 9:30am and from 3-7pm Monday through Friday.

5.) Don’t be afraid to ask for help

DC is a friendly place, for the most part. The attendants at Metro stops, bus drivers, and fellow Metro riders are great resources if you’re ever lost or confused. Just ask!
