Picking the right real estate program can prove to be a trying task. Contributor Jill Phaneuf has weighed in with 6 helpful tips utilizing her vast experience in Real Estate education. Discover, enjoy, and get going with your real estate career!

1.     Go in the evening. Unless you are an international student or intentionally not working, do not withdraw from the workforce. The options are too generous for flexible graduate programs, especially in great markets. You will have gaps in your resume where those getting the same or similar degrees as you will not. Additionally, you will keep making money.

2.     Go in the city. Forget your state school at the graduate level. Real estate is better, and adjunct faculty is better in the city. Generally subscribe to the mindset that cities harbor the talent. Don’t be discouraged by higher tuition rates. Rents are higher in cities, and you will make more money in cities.

3.     Study in a market in which you work. Two very important reasons: 1. You will make great relationships with your faculty and class peers that could carry you in business, and 2. You will learn that market.

4.     Faculty is your greatest resource. Forget career services. We know by now the best way to get a job is “who you know.” Get to know your faculty. Google them, try to preempt what they say in lectures, and generally know “what makes them tick.”

5.     Understand real estate is driven by finance. If you studied architecture or urban planning, start brushing up on your accounting, economics, and finance.

6.     Real Estate is often ill-fit in academia. Because of the complex subject matter, real estate programs are inevitably jammed into one school within a university. Consider if the program is in the schools of business, continuing studies, architecture, or if it’s a consortium. This will play into the overall culture of the program.
