Summer? Internship? Wasn’t that forever ago?

Whether you’re back at school, starting a job hunt or otherwise focused forward, it’s not too late to make sure you’ve made the most from your internship experience. Take a quick scan of the list below before you forget or get forgotten as the waves of summer recede.

Maintain a good relationship with your employer with a thank you note.

  • Get a letter of reference or recommendation from your supervisor or, ideally, the head of the company. Even if you’re finished, it’s not too late to ask. You can help by sending a list of your accomplishments and skills learned. Ideally you have a hard copy of the letter on corporate letterhead. It is a nice portfolio piece.
  • Send thank you notes. A personal note to those who you worked with goes a long way toward marking you as an intern they will remember. Never too late for a thank you.
  • Stay in touch. In many cases, job opportunities pop up either in the same organization where you interned or via their network. Since 80% of jobs are found through networking, a simple email with updates of what you’re doing can be valued and appreciated on many levels plus keep you top of mind.
  • Assemble a portfolio. If possible, make sure you have copies of articles or memos you wrote (that can be shared without privacy concerns) or other artifacts that showcase your work. Let them know your intention for asking.
  • Attend organization events. Even if you are no longer an intern with the organization, try to attend events they host through the year if you live in the same town or manage what you can virtually.

Finally, following up, responding quickly and showing gratitude are keys to success and to counting on your internship serving you for months and even years to come.
