Humor me.

Which of the following best describes the role of money in your thinking about a career path?

  • Money is a major factor.
  • Money is a minor factor.
  • Money is one of many factors.

(We invite you to share your answers below and why you made that choice.)

Why is this relevant?

Because our relationship to money can influence our career choices at a far deeper level than we might originally think.

Expectations and traditions around money and work are commonly inherited from one generation to another. (Families of lawyers, doctors, miners, ranchers, etc.) We also learn about values and beliefs related to money from an early age and around events that involve money like divorce, loss, change of financial status etc. For example:

  • If we experience stress around money early on we might struggle with earning or saving regardless of our career choice.
  • If choose a career path based on family pressure, because it pays well, or for other external reasons we might find that our paycheck isn’t enough to sustain us spiritually for the long term.
  • If we believe that someone else will take care of us or that working for a cause for little or no money can be sustainable, then our bank accounts will likely reflect this thinking.

Though none of the above examples are certainties, they can certainly be predictors. As you look to next steps in your education and career, invest some time in reflecting on and understanding the role of money in your decisions. It will be one of the best investments you can ever make.
