When money and internships are used in the same sentence, the conversation moves quickly toward the debate over paid vs. paid internships. Though important (and one I have strong opinions about) this debate can distract us from what really counts in the end – the quality of the internship experience itself.

To find or make an internship investment pay off, start with the end in mind. Make a detailed list of what you want to come away with and communicate that to others.

Is it to:

  • Get a job offer?
  • Learn more about a profession or industry?
  • Build skills?
  • Build a network?
  • Add experience to a resume?
  • Have fun or explore a new part of the world?

As it turns out, money might be just one of several factors that will weigh into whether the internship will be a good fit. Other factors will be time, energy, location, values and how clear you are in setting expectations with yourself and with others.
