Some people say we should pursue work we love. If we follow our passion we’ll always be excited about getting up in the morning and be inspired to learn and grow. Others say that following our heart isn’t always practical when it comes to paying the bills.

I think both can be true and here’s why.

Making money is something every one of us can do. It’s not difficult.

Choosing a career, on the other hand, asks us to connect to an identity. This is where what we value, how we want to be perceived by others, our strengths and interests, and our social conditioning come together. Being clear about any or all of these things is not always easy!

When pondering a career path, it helps to take money out of the equation all together – at least in the consideration of what drives us at the most basic level. Physically, it is the need for food, shelter, transportation, and good health. Mentally, it is the need for freedom, love and belonging, play or power or respect. When we know what needs are most important to us, the path forward becomes more clear.
