It’s not breaking news that classic craft cocktails are making a major comeback in cities all over America. The only thing better than these delicious creations is the way that some of these cities are capitalizing on the trend. Popping up in NYC, San Fran and now Chicago are more and more of the hidden, prohibition speak-easy style bar. Thanks to social media, hearing about these new spots isn’t difficult; finding them, however, is a different story. With entrances in alleyways, stairwells leading underneath buildings, and even inside phone booths, you have to know what you’re looking for to hit these mysterious new hotspots. Here are a few of the Chicago “speak-easy” bars you don’t want to miss!

The Violet Hour

The Violet Hour – Located in Chicago’s trendy Wicker Park, The Violet Hour is a luxurious experience beginning to end. You have to know what you’re looking for to notice the cutout door on Damen St, marked only by a single light. Once you’re inside and past the velvet curtain, you can either be seated in one of the lounge areas or take a seat at the gorgeous bar to watch the craftsmen do their work. Each cocktail is complex, hand-crafted and sure to delight. As tempting as it is to pull out your smart phone and Instagram the creation you have in front of you, The Violet Hour adds to the experience by requesting no cell phone usage. Oh, and make sure not to bring anyone that “you wouldn’t bring to your mother’s for Sunday dinner.”

Three Dots and a Dash

Three Dots and a Dash – While also dim, sexy and a one-of-a-kind experience, the mood of this River North area bar is wildly different from The Violet Hour. This Tiki lounge sits in a downtown Chicago alleyway, the tiki torch and doorman being your only clues to the entrance of the bar. Once inside, you’re instantly transported to the 1960’s – think Gilligan’s Island, retro-style tiki. The music, decor, and even the waitresses complete the experience, making you forget you’re in Chicago at all. The tropical drinks are strong, fun and each come in a different tiki mug (that you can take home for $15 a pop). You and your friends will find it easy to let yourselves get lost for the night!

The Underground

The Underground – While it may not be the place for a quiet craft cocktail, The Underground has been described as one of Chicago’s sexiest nightclubs. With a stairwell lit only by a neon triangle, the experience feels exclusive right from the start. The ambience and crowd guarantee a good night – whether you’re grabbing a drink, getting bottle service or partaking in the club’s high-end wine program.
