LeBron James announced earlier on Friday that he’s going back to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a Sports Illustrated exclusive. While all of the attention will deservedly be on the initial decision by James, electing not to return to Miami but go back to Cleveland, there was one particularly notable takeaway from the SI announcement which might have implications for Kevin Love, and the Celtics by extension.

In the letter, James noted that he couldn’t wait to get back to his home (James grew up in Akron, Ohio) to play with Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, Dion Waiters, and Anderson Varejao. Notably missing from this list of mentions was the 2014 NBA draft’s first overall pick, Andrew Wiggins. The extremely talented shooting guard would surely have warranted a place in James’ shout outs, yet he was conspicuously absent.

Clearly, it’s too early to know for sure what that means (the 2013 first overall pick, Anthony Bennett, was also missing from the list), but it will send the NBA offseason junkies into speculation overdrive. The Cavs were reportedly interested in the Kevin Love sweepstakes, and keep in mind that Carmelo Anthony (like a majority of free agents) is still available.

The Celtics, who recently made a trade to help Cleveland clear cap space, were also players in the Love sweepstakes, though the rumors have cooled since the draft. That said, Boston GM Danny Ainge was still reported to be interested in Minnesota’s Love. LeBron’s move back to Cleveland could be the difference though. Love will not sign a longterm deal for a team that isn’t a contender, and Boston is now on the opposite end of that spectrum compared to a LeBron-Cavs team.
