Just because something looks good on the runway or in a magazine doesn’t necessarily mean it translates into day-to-day wear. Case in point: acid-wash jeans. Sure, they looked great on the popular musicians of the 80s, but it takes a confident man to walk around in them nowadays. And even then, that man would most likely be the subject of a few head tilts. Recently, the Men’s Health Style Team tackled the challenges of modernizing acid-wash jeans.

“If it’s done right, like these Scotch & Soda Acid Pencil Jeans, and you’re a style risk-taker with a flair for [a] sense of the ironic – you can pull it off,” they say. “If you’d rather avoid ridicule from your buddies, steer clear – it’s a tricky style to master.”

An easier trend to try? Distressed denim – as long as the distressing appears authentic, Men’s Health suggests. Be sure the fading is in zones where natural wear and tear would take place, like the knees and around the back pockets. Also, keep it simple. Pair distressed denim with a white tee or dress it up by wearing a tailored jacket.

Just remember this simple equation: one trend piece (in this case, distressed denim) + two closet staples (black blazer, solid tee) = polished yet stylish.
