Hopefully by this point in the season, you’ve had the chance to feast on a piled-high lobster roll or partake in a lobster boil. It’s summer in New England, and the beloved crustacean is making its way into our meals, and rightly so. But perhaps you’re tired of merely purchasing then enjoying your lobsters – and you want to get your hands dirty in the process, starting from the very beginning. Thanks to the Boston Center for Adult Education, you can.

The upcoming “From Boat to Boil” class at BCAE isn’t your average cooking lesson. Guests will begin their journey at Sargent’s Wharf on the Boston Harbor to meet Boston Lobster Tours‘ Captain Carli aboard the “Fourcast.” From there, you’ll embark on the open sea to learn about the lobster catching trade, handle your own traps, haul in your catch, and band the lobsters’ claws. It may not be “Deadliest Catch,” but it will be a lot more involved than ordering up a pound of live lobster at the local Stop n Shop.

After returning to dry land, the class will head to BCAE on Arlington Street for a cooking lesson led by Island Creek Oyster Bar‘s Chef de Cuisine Nicola Hobson. The behind-the-line style class will walk students through the breakdown, preparation and cooking that goes into the perfect lobster. Once you’ve mastered the lobster boil, you’re invited to enjoy a glass of (well-deserved) wine and get to crackin’. Make sure you savor that lobster.

They say nothing tastes as good as a lobster you caught and cooked yourself, I assume. So join in on the one-session BCAE class taking place Saturday, August 9 from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. The class will be split into two groups of six to take the Boston Lobster Tour, so space is limited. Class reservations are $90 for non-members, $80 for members, plus $10 for materials, and can be made here.
