Arguably the most buzzed-about androgynous model, Andreja Peji? has an impressive track record of bending gender roles. Case in point: She stunned audiences as a male model wearing a women’s bridal look during Jean Paul Gaultier’s 2011 haute couture show. But her latest (and most courageous) move involves life off the runway. Andreja, formerly Andrej, recently announced that she underwent sex reassignment surgery earlier this year.

At 17, Andrej was scouted by a modeling agency, kicking off a career as a non-gender-conforming model. From a Marc Jacobs campaign to the cover of Elle, she garnered attention for strutting in both men’s and women’s clothing on the runway. She calls the transformation a “life-saving” decision, telling PEOPLE magazine: “My biggest dream was to be comfortable in my own body. I have to be true to myself and the career is just going to have to fit around that.”

Andreja has already inspired millions by proudly blurring gender stereotypes. Through publicly revealing her journey, she’s paved the way for others to follow in her groundbreaking footsteps.
