Unless you’re totally living off the grid, you’ve likely heard of the #IceBucketChallenge to raise awareness for ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). If not, here’s the gist: In order to put ALS on the forefront of peoples’ minds, a social media campaign has gone viral for which people dump buckets of ice water over their heads and subsequently nominate their peers to do the same within a 24-hour period or donate directly to charity. Because, who doesn’t want to watch videos of people dousing themselves with frigid H2O for a good cause?

Mayor Marty Walsh got in on the action, having been nominated by none other than his own Chief of Staff, Dan Koh. The mayor, dressed in formal work attire, took the challenge like a champ while helping to introduce ALS to those who know little or nothing about it.

He then nominated local local media and journalists Michael Holley, Andrew Ryan, Rich Weir, Janet Wu and David Bernstein to participate.

Mayor Walsh isn’t the only local big-namer to get in on the action. New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman also took the challenge, calling for teammates Danny Amendola, Rob Gronkowski, and Tom Brady to as well.

But keep in mind, this is hardly a local social media phenomenon. It’s nationwide. Boston.com notes that television hosts Matt Lauer and Martha Stewart, and everyone in between, have taken the challenge as well. It also notes that the challenge really took hold in honor of Pete Frates; “29-year-old Frates played baseball at Boston College and was diagnosed with ALS two and a half years ago.”
