Update: A 50-year-old Boston man was died Tuesday morning after being hit by a car on Memorial Drive in Cambridge.

Preliminary reports at the scene indicate a 2008 Honda Accord, driven by a 24-year-old Brighton man, struck the pedestrian in the roadway on Memorial Drive eastbound. “The reason why the pedestrian was on the roadway in unknown at this time and is part of [an ongoing] investigation,” according to state police.

The man was transported from the scene to Mass General where he was pronounced dead.

The name of the driver and the deceased have not been released.

Memorial Drive eastbound was shutdown for approximately two hours near the area east of the Mass Ave Bridge, while emergency responders were at the scene.

Earlier: A car struck a pedestrian on Memorial Drive eastbound in Cambridge Tuesday morning, Massachusetts State Police say. Initial reports suggest the pedestrian sustained serious injuries.

State police from Boston responded to reports of a crash on Memorial Drive, east of the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge at 7 a.m. Multiple state police units were joined by the Cambridge Fire Department at the scene.

Memorial Drive eastbound has been closed in the area east of the Mass Ave Bridge, with emergency responders at the scene.

According to a state police press release, preliminary reports from the scene indicate the crash involved one vehicle and one pedestrian. The names of the pedestrian and the driver of the vehicle, as well as information about the car’s make and model, have not been made available at this time.

 

In a phone call, a member of the state police media relations department said no additional details, “just what’s on the internet,” have been released.

State police have acknowledged that they will update their press release as more information becomes available. State police are asking people not to call the barracks directly at this time.
