Just when you thought the cupcake fad had crumbled, it seems the sweet treats are attempting a comeback. The popular bakery chain, Crumbs Bake Shop, which closed its doors this past July will begin reopening stores next month, reports the Wall Street Journal.

According to the article, Crumbs Bake Shop “won court approval” yesterday to reopen its stores “under a new ownership team.” This team led by Marcus Lemonis and Dippin’ Dots owner Fischer Enterprises, an “Oklahoma-based investment firm,” will restructure the bake shop into more than just a cupcake shop.

Scott Fischer, chief operating officer of Fischer Enterprises, claims that “the stores will still depend on Crumbs’ well-known cupcakes…but they will also incorporate other food brands that the investor group owns,” notes the Wall Street Journal.

And it looks like Boston’s cupcake fans can expect a new and improved Crumbs Bake Shop sometime soon. The article points out that the cupcake company will be reopening locations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Washington, D.C. However, many of the “mall locations in the Northeast will remain closed.”

Crumbs had three Massachusetts shops including a location on Federal Street, the Prudential Center and the Natick Mall.

The restructuring of the company will certainly be something to watch. But considering the recent closings of multiple Boston-area cupcake shops and bakeries, such as Kickass Cupcakes and Isabelle’s Curly Cakes, we can’t say the cupcake revival is in full swing just yet.
