We have a soft spot for watches. There’s nothing quite like a good TAG Heuer. Or, if we’re feeling big shot-y, a Rolex. Preferably one with a story. It’s been passed down from our grandfathers. It surfaced – unnoticed! – at an estate sale. So there’s a part of us that feels a little sad about yesterday’s big news: details of the much-talked-about Apple Watch. But there’s also a part of us, that same part that gets giddy when our Fitbit clocks in at 20K steps, that thinks: NEED.

You see, this impressive piece of technology promises to capture notifications from your iPhone® 5 and 6, track your activity level, reply to messages, and monitor your heart rate and pulse, all while looking cool on your wrist. (Think customized faces and a wide array of interchangeable straps made out of rubber, leather, or 18k gold.)

In addition to all that, Apple users always look for new and exciting apps. And not-so-surprisingly, Apple delivered. “Apple announced a few useful ones,” said Anick Jesdanun, technology writer for the Associated Press, “including the ability to unlock your Starwood hotel room with a tap of your watch. That’s easier than pulling out your room key from your wallet. BMW also promises one to help you find your parked car in a crowded lot. If it works, that beats walking around in circles.”

But don’t expect to wake up to an Apple Watch lovingly wrapped underneath the tree this holiday season. It won’t be available until early 2015, at the starting price of $349.
