Throughout the end of September, some of Boston’s most frequented public spaces will play host to musically-inclined solar-powered art installations. On Tuesday, September 16, renowned Arkansas-based sound artist Craig Colorusso announced Sun Boxes will make their way to Copley Square, Dewey Square, Boston Common and Fort Point by the Boston Children’s Museum.

Sun Boxes is a traveling art exhibit created Colorusso, who notes on his website that he’s been exploring the intersection of sound, light, and space through sculpture since 2000. As you’ll see in the video above, Sun Boxes is comprised of twenty speakers each connected to a solar panel. By harnessing the power of the sun, these speakers relay a looped guitar note which, when played in sync, relays the harmonic B-Flat chord.

Already Sun Boxes has weaved its way through 35 cities in 18 states, playing soothing sounds in state parks, universities, museums, and festivals.

Given Mayor Walsh’s evident commitment to public art, and keeping Boston at the forefront of green and clean energies, bringing Sun Boxes to Boston was a no-brainer. The Greenway is already home to solar-powered smartphone chargers and an MIT-spun Soofa – a solar-powered, phone-charging bench, not too far from Dewey Square where Sun Boxes will be placed.

The scheduled installation dates for Sun Boxes are as follows:

  • Copley Square, Thursday, September 18, 10:30 am-sundown
  • Dewey SquareRose Kennedy Greenway, Friday, September 19, 10:30 am-sundown
  • Boston Common, Saturday, September 20, 10:30 am-sundown
  • The Children’s Museum, Fort Point, Sunday, September 21, 10:30 am-sundown
