On Friday, October 3, the U.S. General Services Administration announced that they’ve chosen Zipcar as its carshare provider for government employees in four cities including its hometown of Boston.

The GSA, which supports government agencies by offering transportation services, office space and various other managerial services, examined several other carshares as part of a newly-developed program to help federal agencies “reduce costs, improve service and optimize their use of vehicles” according to the GSA.

Federal employees in Boston, Washington D.C., New York City and Chicago will have access to the program.

According to Business Travel News, the GSA is currently experiencing budget constraints and the simplicity of Zipcar’s model, offering the likes of “short-term car-sharing services (a maximum of one full day) as an option,” will allow the GSA to employ a cost-effective and reliable transportation service.

“Zipcar is a smart solution that allows federal employees to have membership access to a wide range of vehicles at locations across the city to meet the demands of their job, while also allowing government agencies to reduce transportation costs,” said Kaye Ceille, Zipcar’s president, in a statement. “Our convenient, cost-effective and sustainable transportation option provides wheels in a new and innovative way for government workers.”

Added GSA Federal Acquisition Services commissioner Tom Sharpe in a statement, “these pilots will tell us whether it is more cost-effective and beneficial to use a car-sharing service in lieu of taxi cabs, renting, leasing and/or purchasing a vehicle.”

Zipcar is also currently being featured in the Design Museum Boston’s exhibit Better Business by Designwhich uses local companies as examples to showcase the importance of design. The exhibit wraps up on October 6.
