If you’ve been looking to get to know the local music scene in Boston, now is your chance. Today at The Lawn on D, the Boston Music Awards are hosting a concert featuring the city’s top musicians in an event dubbed “Sound of Our Town.”

Designed to kick off Boston Music Awards‘ annual season of events (the music awards show takes place on December 14), Sound of Our Town will host New England-bred artists from a variety of genres. The lineup, curated by local online magazine Vanyaland, is headlined by The Both, a duo of Boston alums Aimee Mann and Ted Leo (pictured). Jazz-blues musician Eli “Paperboy” Reed, alt-rock band Speedy Ortiz and rap artist Dutch Rebelle are also slated to perform. Quilt, Hooray for Earth and the Grownup Noise will kick off the show.

The concert is also acting as a vehicle to announce the 2014 Boston Music Awards nominees. This year, after the nominee announcements, live, public voting will be open to those attending Sound of Our Town. The event’s press release states that the votes submitted during the event will be weighed more heavily than online votes.

Last year, top winners included Bad Rabbits, The Field Effect, Kingsley Flood, Speedy Ortiz and more.

If you plan to go to Sound of Our Town today, the party starts at 3 p.m. and is free to attend. Drinks will be served at The Lawn on D’s cash bar, and live voting will count towards the final count for winners at the Boston Music Awards.
