This holiday season, you can give back without leaving the comforts of your favorite Boston restaurant. Starting this November, some of Boston’s best restaurants will begin participating in Hearth Shares, an innovative fundraising program which raises money for local charities working to end homelessness in the Boston area.

Here’s how it works: According to the website, Hearth Shares is partnering with 27 restaurants (and the list is growing) this holiday season. In November and December, diners who eat at these participating restaurants will be able to add a $1 donation (or more) to their bill at the end of the night.

One hundred percent of these $1 donations go to local charities, which provide help to the homeless in Greater Boston. The funds will help move those in shelters and living on the streets into permanent housing.

The Hearth Shares dining program is based on the London-based StreetSmart program, which has now expanded to other countries. According to the website, StreetSmart now partners with 500 restaurants around the world and has several superstar chefs backing the program, including Gordon Ramsay, Fergus Henderson, Angela Hartnett and Ashley Palmer-Watts.

Here in Boston, the similar Hearth Shares program is aiming to raise $70,000 to $80,000 this holiday season, reports the Boston Globe. Participating restaurants so far include Aquitaine, Ashmont Grill, Battery Park, The Beehive, Blue Dragon, Gaslight Brasserie, Lolita Cocina and Tequila Bar, Mistral, Ostra, Teatro, and more.
