It’s almost the weekend, Boston. If you’re hawkishly keeping your eyes on the clock as the hands slowly, almost mockingly, make their way around full circle, I’ve got something that might make your late afternoon all the better. At 4 p.m. Friday afternoon, Boston’s most innovative public space, The Lawn on D, will be transformed into a festive pumpkin patch.

What’s so innovative about a pumpkin patch, you ask? Well, nothing really. Come on now. But the available pumpkins for anyone and everyone to take, and subsequently carve if they so desire, is just one piece of the puzzle. To paraphrase from historic Spartan Kine Leonidas: “This. Is. ‘Punkin Fest.’”

‘Punkin Fest’ kicks off at 4 p.m. and as you’ll see in the photo above, the pumpkin patch is waiting for an intrepid Bostonian like yourself to scour for the most perfect one.

At 7 p.m. even more fun will take place. A light show consisting of pumpkins carved by Bostonians, theatrical moving, shifting colored lights and music, will set the mood and a 20-foot tall pumpkin sculpture will be unveiled. Another light show, in tremendous fanfare and encore fashion, will take place at 9.m.

As if that intriguing installment of public art isn’t enough to entice you over to the 2.7 acre park in the Innovation District, consider the follwing: There will be punkin’ bowling, face painting for the kids, music courtesy of Poydras Punkins, and, come 8 p.m., a party for the grownups.

You’re also advised to leave your stomach as empty as possible. Roxy’s Grilled Cheese and Sausage Guy noshes will be on the scene, as will a special Pumpkin Ale and Cider to wash it all down.

While I realize Halloween is still a week away, it’s never too early to put yourself in the right mindset, so long as that includes spike beverages, fall-flavored treats, outlandish costumes and classic horror flicks.
