On Tuesday, October 28, Robel Phillipos was convicted by a federal jury of lying to authorities about the investigation of his friend, alleged Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. According to the Boston Globe, Phillipos was found guilty of “two counts of making false statements for five false statements he made.”

It took the jury five days and 35 hours of deliberations to reach a verdict. Phillipos was indicted back in August of 2013.

According to the Associated Press, Phillipos’ lawyers argued that the 19-year old was frightened while speaking with the FBI and had smoked marijuana for at least 12-hours straight.

The jury didn’t buy it, however, and determined that Phillipos was in fact in Tsarnaev’s UMass Dartmouth dorm room and witnessed friends Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov remove Tsarnaev’s backpack full of evidence from the scene.

The Globe notes further that because the false statements were made during a terrorism investigation, Phillipos faces up to eight years in prison for each one.

My Fox Boston reports that Phillipos’ sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 29 at 2:30 p.m. and will be remain under house arrest in the meantime.

Tsarnaev’s trial is also slated to begin in January.
