On Tuesday, November 4, Massachusetts will elect a new governor after spending eight years under the dominion of Deval Patrick. On Sunday, November 2, however, consummate bullshit-caller John Oliver had some choice words to say about state legislators during his popular HBO show Last Week Tonight.

Though at first his rant may turn you off from the idea of voting, keep in mind Oliver’s intention is actually quite the opposite. In essence, he calls out several state governments, including Massachusetts’, for harboring and, in some cases, even fostering corrupt politicians, made possible in large part by notoriously low voter turnouts.

Oliver’s observation that three successive Speakers of the House of Representatives have been indicted or convicted is laced with humor, but let this notion wash over you for a hot second: Between 1991 and 2009, the Massachusetts House operated under the yolk of men who resigned after pleading guilty to tax evasion and allegations of perjury and obstruction of justice, and after being convicted of conspiracy, honest services fraud, and extortion.

It is important to note that while allegations were levied against Thomas Finneran, he was never convicted.

But then Oliver sheds light on the case of Dianne Wilkerson, a former state Senator representing the 2nd Suffolk District, who accepted bribes from an undercover FBI agent who, curiously, attempted to hide the cash in her cleavage.

“Stuffing bribe money in a bra is sad for two reasons,” joked Oliver.” One, you’re corrupt. But two, the amount of money it took to corrupt you fits inside your bra.”

According to the FBI, Wilkerson accepted eight payments totaling $23,500.
