On Thrusday, November 13, the two U.S. Senators from Massachusetts, Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey urged their constiuents to pass a resolution honoring the late Mayor of Boston Tom Menino.

Mayor Menino, widely beloved and universally noted for having made the acquaintances more than half of Boston residents, sadly passed away on October 30, 2014. But as Senator Markey noted, to Mayor Menino, that was but a job half done.

Members of all sectors and industries paid their respects to the longest serving mayor in Boston’s history, including President Barack ObamaMayor Marty Walsh, the city’s tech community and higher-education leaders.

Senators Warren and Markey both released statements in remembrance of Mayor Menino, but it wasn’t until Thursday that they resolved to create and official commemoration in remembrance of him and his lasting contributions to Boston.

They each rose and spoke succinctly, no more than three minutes each, and introduced the measure below, aptly referring to Mayor Menino in the body of the text as the endearing “Urban Mechanic.”

“Mayor Menino succeed because he knew all along that our fortunes depend on our work together as one people, as one community, as one Boston.” said Senator Warren. “And he did everything he could to create that united Boston.”

Added Senator Markey, “Boston loves Tom Menino because Tom Menino loved Boston, with all of his heart. Tom Menino wasn’t satisfied with leading the best city in America, he wanted Boston to be the best city in the world. He was an urban architect without equal, attune to every detail in every neighborhood.”

By honoring Mayor Menino, the Senate would, according to the resolution, affirm “the lasting contributions by Mayor Menino to the City of Boston and to the United States” as well as “prepare an official copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mayor Thomas Menino.”
