Update: Sony reverses course; One Boston-area theater is screening “The Interview” on Christmas Day.

After five of the major movie theater chains decided not to release ‘The Interview’ following terrorist threats surrounding the premiere, Sony has pulled the film entirely from all theaters. The two last remaining theaters slated to screen the film on December 25 were the Somerville Theater and Apple Cinemas in Cambridge.

Sony released the following statement:

Earlier: It’s been quite the dramatic lead-up to the Dec. 25-slated opening of the Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy ‘The Interview,’ and now it looks like that premiere might not happen at all.

After a group dubbed Guardians of Peace (GOP) hacked Sony in what may become the largest data breach in corporate history earlier this fall, things escalated this week when the hackers sent threats promising 9/11-style events if the screenings took place. The New York premiere of the movie has been canceled as a result of the threats, and now, it’s been announced that the top five major movie theater companies in the country have decided to pull the film.

AMC, Regal, Cinemark, Cineplex and Carmike won’t be screening ‘The Interview’ due to the terrorist threats, which some investigators have linked to North Korea. (The premise of the film follows Franco and Rogen as they attempt to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and his death scene in the movie has been leaked online.) Earlier, Sony had given movie theater companies their blessing if they decided not to show the movie following the threats.

Carmike was the first chain to do so, and now the other four biggest companies have followed suit, as well as BowTie Cinemas and ArcLight Cinemas. Those who wish to see the movie will have to rely on independent theaters to hold strong in light of the threats.

The Somerville Theater, part of FEI Theatres, is still slated to debut the movie on December 24, according to their website. No word yet on whether they’ll decide to pull it or not, but following the news of AMC’s decision, it seems the film will no longer be shown at AMC Boston Common, where it was originally listed to debut on December 24 as well. Regal Fenway doesn’t have the movie listed to debut at all on either December 24 or 25.

We reached out to AMC Boston Common, but they were unable to answer any questions. At the time of publishing, tickets are still available to purchase on the theater’s website.
