On January 6, Starbucks will switch up our typical morning caffeine jolt with their new Flat White espresso drink. According to Eater, the drink has been available in the UK for several years now and is finally making its way across the states. But, as noted in the article, unlike Starbucks’ seasonal frappes and lattes, the Flat White drink will become a part of Starbucks’ “core menu.”

For those unfamiliar with a Flat White, the drink is “made from two ristretto espresso shots — which are smaller and more concentrated — topped off with whole milk steamed to a ‘micro foam,’” according to Eater’s report.

Food & Wine reports that what makes the Flat White different from other espresso drinks is the milk foam. The article notes that “Flat Whites use what’s called microfoam—steamed milk with tiny bubbles in it.”

A Starbucks’ spokesperson also notes in the Eater article that the pouring method “results in a steamed milk dot in the middle,” which has help to create the recent “latte art” movement.

For those looking to try the new Flat White, you can pick one up on your way to work this coming Tuesday morning. Take a peek at the drink (and its Australian roots) here.
