Weymouth Police Monday morning shot and killed a man involved in a domestic dispute, who would later be identified as the father of Lorrie Higgins’ daughter. Higgins is the longtime girlfriend of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.

WCVB reports that a 49-year old knife-wielding man has been identified as Paul Campbell. Police responded to a call around 1 a.m. early Monday whereupon they found Campbell arguing with his 72-year-old mother on the front steps of 69 Prospect Hill Drive.

Campbell was described as “agitated,” with two knives in hand, having allegedly stabbed his mother. He then proceeded to confront the officers who decided it was necessary for them to use their weapons. Campbell’s mother, Patricia, 72, was declared dead at the scene.

For his part, Mayor Marty Walsh has asked for the public to acknowledge the gravity of the situation and to respect his and the Higgins’ privacy.

“This is an extremely personal situation and I ask that Lorrie and Lauren’s privacy be respected at this time,” said Mayor Walsh. “This is an ongoing investigation and it is not my place to speculate on why or how this happened. My focus right now is on my family, Lorrie and Lauren, and their well-being.”

WVCB notes that Campbell recently had small roles in films shot locally, including “The Fighter,” “Ted” and “American Hustle.”
