Winter Storm Juno is shaping up to be one of the most historic blizzards to ever hit Boston. Accumulation totals in some Massachusetts communities have already surpassed two feet, and there’s plenty left to come. Juno could even gain more notoriety than the infamous blizzard of 1978.

If Juno drops as much as 30 inches of snow on Boston, it would set a record for the city. The blizzard of ’78 was also a record breaker. Boston received 27.1 inches and the blizzard was only outdone by the one in 2003 which totaled 27.5 inches.

The damage caused by the blizzard of ’78, though, was catastrophic. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), it caused $529 million in damage (roughly $1.8 billion today when adjusted for inflation) and claimed the lives of 100 people in the Northeast. Another 4,500 sustained injuries.

Mayor Marty Walsh is reporting that in Boston, no major incidents have occurred as a result of the snow. The status for the rest of the Commonwealth is about the same.

To give you a better idea of what the blizzard of ’78 was like, the City of Boston Archives dug up some old photos of the cityscape during the storm.

Do you think Juno can really top it?
