Ink Block developer National Development Monday morning announced plans to build a new European-style Marriott hotel on Albany Street, adjacent to its much talked-about mixed-use project in Boston’s South End.

The new “European-inspired” AC Hotel by Marriott will occupy the former sites of FW Webb and Independent Taxi, both of which were previously acquired by National Development, a press release states. Construction on the new 200-room hotel is expected to begin later this year, with a grand opening slated for early 2017.

“The character of the neighborhood and its surroundings are quickly evolving. A new community is emerging that not only reflects the vibe, context and culture of the South End, but is representative of where Boston is going,” said National Development managing partner Ted Tye in the press release.

The Marriott will sit across from (see: above) four Ink Block buildings – Ink 1, Ink 2, Ink 3 and SEPIA – located at the old Boston Herald site, on Harrison Avenue and Traveler Street. Ink 1, 2, and 3 will house 315 units; and SEPIA will be comprised of 83 luxury condo units. The mixed-use development is anchored by a new 50,000-square-foot Whole Foods, which opened in the middle of January.

“The response to the recent opening of Whole Foods at Ink Block has been off the charts,” Tye continued in his statement. “With the success of Ink Block and other new development, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the market is demanding these types of dynamic mixed-use projects.”

The hotel will be designed by Boston architect Elkus Manfredi, and Cranshaw Construction has signed on as general contractor. National Development has yet to secure a management firm for the hotel.
