Valentine’s Day is coming up fast, and if you’ve got your plans made, there’s only one thing left to decide – what you’re going to wear. Unless you’re an elementary school student or teacher, chances are you’re not going to be rocking anything covered in hearts or a combination of reds and pinks.

Of course, you still want to look special and somewhat festive without going over the top. To help you figure out how to do so, we recruited Rue La La’s Fashion Director, Jackie Nassar, for some wise advice. Below, find out what kind of style she suggests for any V-Day occasion, from a fancy dinner to a night on the couch.

Going out to a fancy dinner?

Jackie Nassar: There’s a right way to wear red. Start with a bright lipstick red dress, then add heels, a sparkly clutch and some interesting jewelry, like a bold cuff or statement earring. Throw on a leather jacket for added edge and opt for a swipe of lipstick that matches your dress – while this may have been a no-no in the past, it’s an updated, fresh take on the bold red lip. If Beyoncé’s embracing the trend, I’m all for it.

A low-key night at the movies?

JN: Checking out the biggest blockbuster with your friends or significant other? Your biggest priority should be comfort – but that doesn’t mean it’s OK to wear a sweatsuit. Instead, look to a pair of leather pants or skinny jeans and layer a comfy tee with a boyfriend-style cardigan (or wear a chambray shirt unbuttoned as a jacket). Lastly, add wedge sneakers and throw on a blanket scarf since it’s always cold in the theater.

Staying in?

JN: Master the ‘athleisure’ trend that we’re seeing all over the runways. I’m not talking about breaking out your college sweats – this is all about being comfortable while looking chic. Pair a fitted or tailored “sweat” pant with a boxy crop top or cashmere sweater.  Put your hair in a ballerina-style bun and add a pop of color – I like a hot pink lip.

Doing something adventurous?

JN: If you’re spending Valentine’s Day with a thrill-seeker, make sure you’re prepared for whatever comes your way (and to sweat in style). Pair bright or patterned workout leggings with layered tanks – I love a bright tank under a waffle knit or burnout tee. Finish off your look with fashionable yet functional sneakers. The throwback styles we’re seeing this year will have you going from rock climbing to drinks in a snap.

Have a stylish Valentine’s Day!
