Just this week, a Brandwatch study revealed that Boston’s Twitter community was the third unhappiest in the country. After getting barraged by snowstorm after snowstorm (with another one on the way…) as well as residual MBTA woes, the dismal ranking doesn’t come as that much of a surprise.
And today, another Twitter study, this time performed by the social media platform, provides us with new insight on how people in Massachusetts are tweeting. In honor of Valentine’s Day, Twitter created an interactive “United States of Love” map, based on which states are tweeting the mushy stuff, and which states are anti-Valentine’s Day. And while Mass. proved less grumpy this time around, we’re still not lighting up Twitter with any love-struck tweets, either.
To determine the ranking, Twitter counted all the tweets per million people that said the words “love” or “loved” since 2006. Massachusetts fell right in the middle of the pack at number 23 with a total of 54,118 tweets with the words, proving our love for showing our love on social media is lukewarm, at best. This is the first time Twitter ran this type of study, so we can’t look back at last year’s rankings to find out if Massachusetts fell a few notches after this winter has turned our collective hearts cold and black. Valentine’s Day might very well be canceled by another blizzard and an inoperative MBTA; can you blame us?
Down in Kentucky, however, the Southerners are heating things up in Twitter. The state took the number one spot with 64,938 tweets, followed by Tennessee and Nebraska. At the bottom of the list was D.C. with 35,073 tweets, proving politics are a heartless game, followed by Louisiana and Maryland.
Twitter also analyzed the lovey tweets to see what relationship and dating trends were recurring most often at different times of year. This is what the platform found:
- January:
- First date/#firstdate
- Friend zone / #FriendZone
- March:
- #breakup/#justbrokeup
- July:
- Just married / #justmarried
- August:
- Engaged / #engaged
- Online dating / #onlinedating
- December: Divorced / #divorced
