College students and the vicious September 1 lease cycle can make moving in Boston a massive headache, with problems caused by a lack of U-Haul trucks and available movers around August 31. So what about all the college students who aren’t busy moving? A company that recently launched in Boston wants to put them to work.

Bellhops, based out of Tennessee, has expanded to 13 new cities including Boston, and it functions similar to an “Uber for movers.” The movers that they hire, however, are strictly college students. The on-demand platform allows customers looking for help with their move to post details of what they need (a local move, loading help or unloading help), and then an active “Bellhop” (college student-turned-mover) can claim the job. Bellhops get paid based on the size of the job, and Bellhops states in a release that they can make up to $15 an hour plus tips.

Similar to Uber drivers, Bellhops can work when they want to, around their own schedules. Bellhops will be recruiting 600 students at 30 different colleges in their 13 new markets; in Boston, they’ll be hiring at Boston University, among others.

Bellhops also strives to continue employment for their college students after they graduate: according to a press release, 25 percent of the employees at Bellhops’ headquarters are former movers. This summer, they’ll be hiring more college students as interns.
