How ironic that when the MBTA finally gets  of its subway and Commuter Rail track up and running, it’s the payment platforms that give out.

On Monday morning, credit/debit machines at Alewife Station, the northernmost terminus of the Red Line, are out of service.

According to MBTA alerts, “sales are not available at Alewife due to water damage and purchases made on MBTA.com can’t be auto-delivered there.”

MBTA spokesperson Joe Pesaturo told BostInno that the water damage has directly affected cables rending them inoperable for the time being.

Pesaturo described it as a “temporary outage” and when asked for a timeline on being fixed, he said “personnel are still assessing the damage to the wiring.”

The outage isn’t affecting the fare gates themselves. If MBTA users have money loaded on their CharlieCards, they’re still able to tap the gate with their card allowing them to enter the platform. It’s the actual monetary transaction that’s posing problems.

“We’ve instructed personnel at the station to accommodate customers who may be affected by this temporary outage,” said Pesaturo further.

On Monday the MBTA was finally able to announce that all subway and trolley lines are fully operational for the first time since Feb. 1. Since that time, more than 90 inches of snow have fallen on Boston rendering the embattled transit system almost completely helpless for weeks on end.
