A male MIT freshman died in an apparent suicide Saturday night, The Tech reports.

Matthew L. Nehring, of Colorado, died in MIT’s Stata Center, a distinctive campus building in Kendall Square, housemaster Robert C. Miller wrote in a Sunday email to East Campus residents. Nehring, a member of the class of 2018, lived on First West (1W).

“I have some terrible news to share about one of our students, Matthew Nehring, a freshman on 1W,” Miller wrote, according to The Tech. “Last night, in the Stata Center, Matthew apparently took his own life.”

In a separate email, MIT President L. Rafael Reif announced a community gathering in remembrance of Nehring on Tuesday, March 3, at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Lobby of MIT’s Building 10.

“In this moment of tragedy, we extend heartfelt sympathies to Matthew’s family and friends,” Reif wrote in his campus-wide email.

MIT media relations did not immediately respond to BostInno’s request for comment Monday morning.

On Sunday afternoon, an East Campus meeting was held with MIT Mental Health and Student Support Services, graduate resident tutors, and Chancellor Cynthia A. Barnhart, The Tech reports. Additionally, The Tech reports “several students” emailed condolences to East Campus members, extending open invitations to classmates to come to their rooms “to pray and talk about depression.”

Nehring was a member of The Tech‘s business department.
