Primark executives say the Dublin-based retailer plans to open its Downtown Crossing store in September.

Located at the former Filene’s Basement site, Primark’s first United States store is set to occupy 70,000 square feet across four floors of Boston’s historic Burnham Building. Vacant since 2006, the Burnham Building is the heart of a nearly $700 million DTX renovation project spearheaded by Millennium Partners, the developer behind Millennium Tower.

Primark executive director Breege O’Donoghue told BostInno in a Tuesday meeting that the high volume retailer – currently with 287 stores in nine European countries – was attracted to the “established location” of the old Filene’s site and Boston’s large student population.

Jose Luis Martinez De Larramendi, the president of Primark US Corp, said Boston has the “cosmopolitan and international” vibe the retailer desires in bringing its brand of affordable fashion and household items to the states.

Sears Holdings announced in the fall that Primark had agreed to take on leases in seven of its U.S. locations. By 2016, Primark expects to have a total of ten stores across the U.S., including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
