Fast-food drive-in joint Sonic (Nasdaq: SONC) currently has just a handful of locations in the Greater Boston area. But the company’s senior vice president says a large-scale expansion is in the works, which would see the Oklahoma City-based chain firmly cement itself in the Boston market.

Sonic Corp. SVP of franchise sales and international development Bob Franke told the Boston Business Journal that the chain plans to expand from four to 40 restaurants in the Greater Boston area over the next five years. Sonic’s short-term plans include locking down five multi-franchise agreements in the next six months, Franke told the BBJ.

Franke suggested Sonic’s plans to open up 40 drive-in locations around Boston are just the start of what could be a regional takeover. “And looking at all of New England, there’s probably 25 to 30 more beyond that,” he told the BBJ.

Greater Boston’s current Sonics are located in Stoughton, Wilmington, Peabody and Lawrence. Known best for its drive-in style service, Sonic started franchising in New England in 2006, Franke told the BBJ.

Sonic’s expansion plans are fueled by the success that the restaurant has found in the Northeast since introducing indoor seating. “And that gives customers a choice in cold weather markets where they didn’t have that choice before,” Franke told the BBJ.
