The man Stephen Silva said gave him the gun that he would later hand to Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in early 2013 was indicted on a federal gun charge last week.

Merhawi “Howie” Berhe, 21, of Cambridge, “knowingly possessed” a Ruger pistol, which had had its serial number stripped off in 2012, according to the federal indictment first reported by ABC News.

Silva, a childhood friend of Tsarnaev, provided testimony in the death penalty trial of the surviving marathon bomber. On the stand, Tuesday, Silva identified the gun, a P95 Ruger pistol, which was allegedly used to kill MIT police officer Sean Collier.

Police say they later recovered the gun after the shootout in Watertown, which left the older Tsarnaev brother, Tamerlan, dead.

Berhe was arrested on March 11. His arraignment in U.S. District Court was Monday. He was released on bail, ABC News reports.
