The Jodi Arias jury returned today for day four of deliberations to determine her fate for the gruesome murder of Travis Alexander and after more than 15 hours of deliberations that kept our watchful nation on pins and needles. The jury, comprised of eight men and four women, began deliberations last Friday and yielded the verdict today. The Jodi Arias verdict will be read exactly at 4:30 pm Eastern Time. A first degree murder chard for Arias could carry the death penalty. For those who have been entranced by the trial though, there may be more waiting to come. A subsequent sentencing trial, penalty phase, and aggrivation mitigation may determine whether Arias be sentenced to death or not. Should the jury find that the murder was premeditated and that Arias acted with cruelty beyond a reasonable doubt, she will be put to death.

Arias may conversely be charged with second degree murder or the even lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter which could put Arias behind bars for life without parole.

Arias stands accused of murdering her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander in Mesa, AZ on June 4, 2008. Alexander was brutally shot in the head, incurred 27 stab wounds, and had his throat slashed from ear-to-ear. The medical examiner aptly ruled the death a homicide.

Arias’ trial began on January 2 of this year where she testified that she did in fact kill Alexander, though it was strictly in self-defense after Alexander became violent during a verbal argument. After four months of testimony, the jury resumed their deliberations this afternoon at 1pm ET. Prosecutor Juan Martinez appealed to the jurors’ sense of civic duty multiple times in his closing arguments to convict Arias of first degree murder, carrying the death sentence.

“The state is asking that you return a verdict of guilty, a verdict of first degree murder, not just premeditated murder, but also felony murder, for no other reason than it’s your duty, and the facts and the law support it,” he stated.

Conversely, defense attorney Kirk Nurmi suggested that Arias simply reached her breaking point after being subjected to heinous physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.

He said, “It may be that Jodi Arias didn’t know when to stop. Couldn’t it also be that after everything that she simply snapped? She may not know it, but she may very well have snapped. Out of control. Sudden heat of passion. We have been through so much and look what happened now, this instance of violence went too far.”

The trial has captivated the nation for its entirety, but reached new heights after the jury deliberated the verdict–based on over 600 pieces of evidence, 18 weeks of testimony, and Arias spending a total of 19 days on the stand–for more four days and more than 15 hours.

Arias’ case has been oft compared to that of Casey Anthony’s a few years back. Parallels include a fresh-faced young woman who appeared to be perfectly normal to friends, family, and strangers alike but also hid a dark side that seemed apparent through odd facial expressions during intense moments during the trial. Its noteworthy to remember that Anthony  was found not guilty regarding first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and aggravated child abuse charges.

Alexander’s horribly disfigured body was found by friends stuffed in a stand-up shower after he failed to show up to two appointments.
