Senior gameplay designer Andreas Jerfors billed his Wolfenstein: The New World Order demo at E3 today as “the most fun way to kill Nazis as possible.” By the looks of things, he could very well be right. The latest installment in the Wolfenstein franchise, created by MachineGames and published by Bethesda Softworks, is an attempt by the creators to fuse the best of old-school shooter games with modern day FPS games.

The game itself is story driven, featuring B.J. Blazkowicz as the user protagonist who wakes up from coma only to find the world ravaged and usurped by the Nazis having won World War II in this historical reimagining.

By revising such a significant era, Wolfenstein engineers and designers were able to reference historical fact and mold it to their own tailored direction of gameplay which virtually gives them unlimited artistic license.

As for in-game features weapon upgrades are huge. As you navigate through the Nazi-driven world, the new laser cutter allows for splicing through fences and walls in order to discover new map routes while also moonlighting as weapon that shoots through the cover of your choosing while in hiding to decimate your enemy.

Though the game will only be available in single-player mode, different experience levels and head-to-head combat with unheralded robotic creatures add some variety and unique challenges to the first-person action adventure.

The bottom line is that MachineGames and Bethesda Softworks wanted to give the user and the characters as many map options and weapons upgrades as possible in order to infiltrate Nazi strongholds and overthrow the tyrannical regime.

Wolfenstein is due out by December of this year, just in time for next-generation consoles like Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as current-gen Xbox 360, PS3, and PC models.

Don’t take the E3 nerds’ word for how awesome it is to mow down Nazis, check out the trailer and demo yourself and let us know what you think. Will the first-person shooter prove successful? Which console do you think the game will play on best?
