The Big One

A breakdown on the day’s biggest Inno story.

Sri: Today’s Big One comes from our freelancer, Katherine Igoe.

The opioid epidemic in the United States is at crisis levels: two million Americans have become addicted and over 63,000 die every year.

In 2017, the New England region saw a slight decrease in these numbers, thanks to recent efforts that include increasing the availability of naloxone and treatment beds and limiting opioid prescriptions. Based on a CDC breakdown in 2016, the total cost for the state to manage and control the epidemic is as high as $10B.

Plenty of local startups have become a part of this effort. Their tactics vary, from encouraging and maintaining sobriety to creating less addictive painkillers and helping cities measure community addiction.

Here are a few we featured.

Making Moves

Inside the people, companies and organizations making moves in Boston.

Sri: WaveSense, a Somerville startup that makes navigation systems, came out of stealth mode and unveiled a product for self-driving vehicles — A patented military-proven ground-penetrating radar that helps self-driving vehicles stay in-lane. The MIT-born startup’s technology continually scans the subsurface soil layers, rocks and road bedding about 126 times per second and compares the scans to its onboard image database to determine the exact vehicle position in relation to the road. The company just raised a seed round; check out our “New Money” section below to learn more.

Lucy: There’s a new, restaurant-friendly startup in town. Boston-based Open City is a chatbot app “that makes getting in touch with a restaurant as easy as sending a text,” The Globe reported. The software analyzes customers’ queries and either provides responses using artificial intelligence, or routes messages directly to the person on staff tasked with handling special requests. Jeff Gates rolled out the app for his South End restaurant Cinquecento in May.

The fun stuff.

Sri: Is the world ready for a film full of jump cuts every ten seconds? Ready or not, GIPHY, the search engine for GIFs, is launching a new film festival to showcase the medium’s narrative potential. Open to all filmmakers, artists, designers and restless minds residing in the U.S., The GIPHY Film Fest will highlight loopable “micro films” up to 18 seconds. And GIPHY claims that these micro-films can be just as compelling, entertaining and professional. Someone page Coen Brothers, quick!
