After a heart wrenching loss to the Capitals, there will be no fairy tale playoff run for our home town Black and Gold this year. But the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs continue. We dug into the buzz surrounding each of the eight remaining playoff teams on Facebook, tapping our Facebook advertising software, Ad Engine, for the data. And as you can see from our infographic below, it’s a Flyers nation on Facebook — even here in Massachusetts.

We pitted the 2012 NHL Stanley Cup playoff teams against one another by their Facebook popularity, examining the total number of Americans interested in each team, which team each state is cheering for, as well as the overall demographics of NHL fans.

After the early exits of the popular Blackhawks and Bruins, Flyers fans have both the most popularity overall on Facebook as well as on a state-by-state basis. When examining overall team popularity on Facebook on a series-by-series basis, we found that nearly every team had a similar level of popularity as their competitor — with the exception of the Flyers, who far outpace the Devils 3:1.

Who are NHL fans on Facebook? Mostly Gen Y and Gen X, with Facebook users under the age of 30 representing 68% of NHL fans. NHL fans are predominantly male, with women representing only 37% of NHL fans on Facebook. And perhaps a function of the age of NHL fans of Facebook swinging younger, 48% are singles, 24% are in a relationship and 28% are married.

Are you cheering for the same team as the majority of people in your state? Does anything surprise you about the data? Let us know in the comments!
