It can sometimes be confusing to figure out what time thoroughbred horseracing starts. With all of the hype, concerts, celebrities, and traditions it can feel as if there’s so much going on that if you look away for a minute, you’re sure to miss the race. Well, not to worry Preakness fan. We’ve got you covered. NBC will begin its television coverage from Pimlico Race Crouse in Baltimore, MD at 4:30pm ET today. The Preakness start time, or what’s known as the post time, is at 6:20pm ET. Post time is when the jockey has to have their horse on the starting line and the starting gun is usually shot a minute or few after.

Come post time, the big name making headlines is Orb. Orb (even odds) is a three-year old colt ridden by jockey Joel Rosario in the first post position. Being closes to the rail has both its advantages and disadvantages. It can be helpful in that its the shortest distance from start to finish and give the horse an advantage coming around turns. But holding the first position can get the pony boxed in.

If Orb does get boxed in the likely culprit will be Goldencents (8-1) in the second position. Jockey Kevin Krigger will hope to silence critics after his muddy 17th place Kentucky Derby Finish, though the great weather at Pimlico today is sure to help. Goldencents was the media hog coming into the Derby as he drew great odds, a worthy post position, and is partially owned by University of Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino.

So with plenty of time until Preakness coverage begins and with post time not until 6:20pm, we’re curious as to how you’re going to spend your race day. Are you going to turn your house into an infield-like party? Are you picking a horse to win? Will Orb take one step closer to the Triple Crown? Drop your knowledge on us below.
