The 2014 Boston Marathon is less than a week away and the amount of reflection and gratitude exhibited by Bostonians and supporters one year after the Marathon bombings is contagious. So much so, in fact, that Boston-based running apparel company Janji is helping to spread philanthropical sentiments beyond the Marathon finish line and into third world countries.

To help with the Boston Marathon’s charitable causes, Janji is selling garb to help benefit Kenya and Haiti. When a runner buys Janji’s Kenya shorts, they give one season of water to a Kenyan family. Similarly, Janji’s Haiti running shirt affords eight packets of nutritional medicine.

BostInno spoke with Janji co-founder Dave Spandorfer, who launched the clothing company with Mike Burnstein in 2012, via email to find out how exactly Janji’s system works.

“Whenever a runner buys a Janji shirt or shorts they’re helping that country directly with either water or nutrition,” Spandorfer explained, adding:

So when a runner buys Janji’s Kenya shirt, we give $4 from the shirt to our partner in Kenya, KickStart. That ends up being the equivalent of one season of water to a family in Kenya. In Haiti, we partner with Meds & Food for Kids, which makes peanut butter based nutritional medicine. As a result, when a runner buys Janji’s Haiti shorts, he or she gives eight packets of nutritional medicine to a child in Haiti. It’s buy that country, help that country.

To help Boston Marathon participants and spectators get involved, Janji will be undertaking a three-pronged approach to bolster their charity. They’ll be hunkering down at a large booth at the Boston Marathon Expo in tandem with City Sports. Janji also created a crowdsourced Boston shirt – every shirt purchased will give eight meals to a family in Boston through a partnership with The Greater Boston Food Bank.

Finally, they’ll be throwing an awesome Boston Marathon bash after the race at T.T. the Bear’s Place in Cambridge. The $10 entry goes directly to the Greater Boston Food Bank, and affords you the opportunity to enjoy New Orleans-based funk rock band The Revivalists.

Janji gear is now sold in more than 100 running stores nationwide and helps six countries across the globe.
