Most Boston residents fall into two different St. Patrick’s Day camps. Those who live for the Southie parade – and those who’d much rather be anywhere else. We hear ya. But anyway you look at it, most Boston residents do enjoy celebrating the Irish holiday in some fashion – whether it’s with shamrock decor, with Guinness or by pinching people (in 3rd grade, anyway).

So which is the better way to spend your St. Patrick’s Day? We’ve rounded up some of the pros and cons of each below. But ultimately, you decide. Vote in our St. Patrick’s Day poll and see what the rest of Boston really thinks.

Go to the St. Patrick’s Day parade in South Boston

Pros: It’s a tradition. You can gather with thousands of locals to show off your Irish pride while enjoying the camaraderie of like-minded folks. You can wear as much green as you want – the more, the better. And if it’s a beautiful day, you can enjoy the brisk, cool sunshine outside (finally). Oh, and lots of green beer and bar hopping, obviously.

Cons: Well for starters – good luck drinking in public. Last year, somewhere around 336 people were cited for drinking at the parade and 26 were arrested for disorderly conduct. Yikes. Not to mention, the parade is crowded as all get out. But hey, if you’re looking for a real bar fight, head on down to this parade.

Don’t go to the St. Patrick’s Day parade

Pros: Save your toes and save your liver. If you decide to skip the St. Patrick’s Day parade, you can opt to hit up one of the many celebrations happening around town, instead. Enjoy food and drink specials while avoiding large crowds, getting stepped on, and – of course – getting punched in the face. Sounds like a winner to me.

Cons: Many would say that if you miss the Southie parade, you’re not a true Bostonian. Not to mention, you may experience some serious FOMO given that all of your Southie-bound friends will fill your Instagram with rip-roaringly drunk photos this Sunday. Hey, maybe next year.
