As if The Lawn on D, a 2.7-acre park on D Street next to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, doesn’t offer Bostonians enough engaging events and innovative installments (it most certainly does), the masterminds behind Boston’s next great public park are helping to give you a playground item found almost anywhere. Only, the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority isn’t breaking ground on any old swing set.

Dubbed ‘Swing Time,’ these swings are no ordinary oscillating seats. Rather, they’re more one part swing, one part interactive art. And they’re designed so that those who use them will not only interact with the swing, but interact with each other as well. At least, that’s the intention of designers Meejin Yoon and Eric Höweler of Höweler + Yoon Architecture.

‘Swing Time’ is comprised of 20 ring-shaped swings outfitted with internal LED lighting systems. The swings illuminate in different effects when people engage with them due to a micro-controller and accelerometer connected to the lighting. So, when people swing at different speeds and heights, the LED patterns will reflect that.

On Thursday, September 11, The Lawn on D will host a lighting ceremony for ‘Swing Time’ at which point Höweler and Yoon will flip the switch and light up the swings for the very first time.

This is hardly the kind of lighting ceremony you’d expect of, say, a Christmas tree. The shindig will boast a speciality ‘Swing Time’ cocktail, live swing music, bocce, ping-ping, cornhole and food trucks, to name just a few of the fun features.

The party kicks off at 7 p.m. and the lighting will take place at 8 p.m. sharp. The event is free for anyone and everyone to attend.

See you there. I’ll be the guy having a go at ‘Swing Time’ while drinking a swing time.
