As part of Mayor Marty Walsh’s plan to elevate Boston’s arts and cultural profile, ‘Late Night Arts’ film screenings will take place at four local theaters on Friday and Saturday September 26 and 27. The event is held in conjunction by the City of Boston, Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the MBTA. The films will include cult classics, such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Breakfast Club and Mean Girls.

People can access the theaters (as listed below) using the MBTA’s Extended Late Night Services, which was implemented in March and extends rapid transit and bus services until 2:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. More than 500,000 trips have been taken on the MBTA between 12:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. since the service began.

Mayor Walsh said late night service plays a key role in promoting art and culture within the city.

“The City’s work through our Late Night Task Force has been focused on a number of initiatives relative to making Boston a vibrant, cosmopolitan city,” said Mayor Marty Walsh in a statement. “The success of the MBTA’s extended hours underscores the interest in these initiatives. The ‘Late Night Arts’ programming is a creative and entertaining way to engage those who are living, studying, and working in Boston.”

Walsh is working with MassDOT and the MBTA to plan more ‘Late Night Arts’ activities in the city. Additionally, Walsh also appointed Julie Burros as Boston’s Chief of Arts and Culture on Tuesday, Sept. 23. According to the City of Boston, Burros’s new position has been vacant for the past 20 years.

“Our late night weekend service has attracted students, service employees, entrepreneurs, and people of all ages,” added MBTA General Manager Dr. Beverly Scott. “I am pleased to see the T help to deliver a fun weekend outing in the local theaters as we continue to improve our regional quality of life.”
