Though Boston and Cambridge are usually lauded for their efforts to bolster biking, it turns out Somerville reigns supreme in that regard. The League of American Bicyclists published its findings on the best commuting cities when it comes to cycling, and it turns out, regionally, Somerville dominates.

The annual study, based on U.S. Census data from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012, from cities with a population of 65,000 and greater, shows that Somerville came in fourth in terms of top 25 cities with the highest share of bicyclists trailing only Coulder, Colo.; Palo Alto, Calif.; and Berkeley, Calif.

According to the data, 7.8 percent of Somerville commuters, of its population of 78,814 use a bike. About 3,631 of them bike.

Cambridge was no slouch, though, taking the number two slot in the East at 6.49 percent. However, New Haven, Conn.; Philadelphia, Penn.; and Pittsburgh, Penn. all ranked higher than Boston where just 1.95 percent of the population bikes to work. Keep in mind, though that 1.95 percent in Boston equates to 6,662 people.

“This is a tremendous achievement that has a positive impact on our environment, our economy and our health,” said Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone. “We’ve worked hard at making it easier and safer to bike to work in Somerville. This is a great achievement and we’re inching closer to our goal of being number one in the nation.”
